Detoxification:  In today’s modern world we are overloading our bodies with toxins that are found in the air, our food, and in many of the products we use day to day.   To give the body the needed boost it needs to clean all this mess up, a Body Cleanse, if just the thing!

Natural sunscreen you’ve got to try to get you ready for summer fun!

One hundred years ago the majority of jobs involved working outdoors yet the sunscreen craze was no where to be found – neither was skin cancer. Sure, there were a few cases, but it’s interesting that with the increase sales of sunscreen the rate of skin cancer has also increased.

So what did the people in years gone by know that we don’t?

Well, they:

-were a bit more modest in their dress and wore lots of protective clothing.
-they knew to stand in the shade if at all possible.
-they avoided direct exposure to the noon sun.
-their diets were wholesome and consisted of real foods.

Did you know that we can dramatically improve our resistance to the sun’s harmful rays through dietary changes! Yes! Our skin is our largest organ right? So that means, when our immune system is functioning on low due to an over consumption of processed foods we weaken our first line of defense and place ourselves at greater risk.

I love that seasonal summer foods — such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, cherries (and fruits of all kinds), beans, nuts, and a variety of legumes — are some of the highest antioxidant foods on the planet…just what our bodies’ need for healthy skin and natural sun protection.

Ingredients that Naturally Protect Us from the Sun

There are natural ingredients, some may be found in our kitchens, that work to protect us from over exposure to the sun. Many are oils that contain SPF properties such as:

  • Raspberry Seed Oil. The highest of all natural ingredients, contains an estimated SPF of 30-50.
  • Shea Butter. An excellent skin protectant with an SPF of approximately 6-10.
  • Carrot Seed Oil. Carrot seed oil is an essential oil and has been estimated to contain SPF levels of 30.
  • Wheat Germ Oil. While super nourishing for the skin, it too possesses a natural SPF of 20.
  • Sesame oil, Coconut Oil, Hemp oil, Avocado oil.  All contain SPF levels between 4-10.

However, none of these ingredients are necessarily adequate on their own to provide us protection for an all day experience…say, out on the lake.

In order to make your own sunscreen you really should add the natural mineral zinc oxide (and possibly titanium oxide) to your recipe. This will give you real power to reflect the sun’s ray, with minimal negative effects.

 

A Recipe for Natural Homemade Sunscreen 

by Frugally Sustainable

Ingredients
Customize this recipe based on your budget and what you have available.

 

-1 ounce oil blend (use any combination of the oils listed above)
-1 ounce beeswax (adds waterproof properties)
-1 ounce butter blend (i.e. Shea butter, mango butter, or cocoa butter)
-1 teaspoon vitamin E oil
-0.36 ounces zinc oxide powder
-30 drops essential oils, optional

 

Method

1. Gather ingredients and kitchen tools. Note: Many of the oils listed above can be found in the grocery store or health food store. I love the quality and cosmetic properties of the oils, essential oils, and butters available from Mountain Rose Herbs. They are my source for these things. Find beeswax here or search for a local source by clicking here.

 

2. In a double boiler, over low heat, melt the oils, beeswax, and butters.

 

3. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly prior to adding the vitamin E oil, zinc oxide powder, and essential oils. Note: Wear a mask when working with zinc oxide. Although it has not been proven harmful when used topically, inhaling the substance can be dangerous.

 

4. Stir until zinc oxide is dissolved. Note: Purchase zinc oxide powder here. 

 

5. Pour into a push-up or roll-up dispenser. This recipe will produce a product similar to a lotion bar or sunscreen stick. You could easily clean out and re-purpose a used deodorant or lip balm container. But, if you want to buy a new one…I love these containers.

 

6. Allow to cool and harden on the counter overnight and then you’re good to go! During times of heavy sun and swim exposure be sure to reapply often for the best coverage.

 

Notes

-This recipe contains zinc oxide at 12% which gives it an SPF of around 10-12 (note: this has not been approved or tested). See this awesome chart to reduce or increase the amount of zinc oxide based on your family’s needs.

Cholesterol Myths

TO BUTTER OR NOT TO BUTTER? That is the question…

Cholesterol is not a deadly poison, but a substance vital to the cells of all mammals. There are no such things as good or bad cholesterol, but mental stress, physical activity and change of body weight may influence the level of blood cholesterol. A high cholesterol is not dangerous by itself, but may reflect an unhealthy condition, or it may be totally innocent.

A high blood cholesterol is said to promote atherosclerosis and thus also coronary disease. But many studies have shown that people whose blood cholesterol is low become just as atherosclerotic as people whose cholesterol is high.

Your body produces three to four times more cholesterol than you eat. The production of cholesterol increases when you eat little cholesterol and decreases when you eat much. This explains why the “prudent” diet cannot lower cholesterol more than on average a few percent.

There is no evidence that too much animal fat and cholesterol in the diet promotes atherosclerosis or heart attacks. For instance, more then twenty studies have shown that people who have had a heart attack haven’t eaten more fat of any kind than other people, and degree of atherosclerosis at autopsy is unrelated with the diet.

The new cholesterol-lowering drugs, the statins, do prevent cardio-vascular disease, but this is due to other mechanisms than cholesterol-lowering. Unfortunately, they also stimulate cancer in rodents. Many of these facts have been prevented in scientific journals and books for decades but are rarely told to the public by the proponents of the diet-heart idea. These drugs are dangerous to your health and may shorten your life.

The reason why laymen, doctors and most scientists have been misled is because opposing and disagreeing results are systematically ignored or misquoted in the scientific press.

Feeling Out of Sorts

FEELING OUT OF SORTS

There’s nothing wrong that you can really put your finger on, but this may mean that you’re about to get sick.  It also may mean that your body is fighting something off.  In either case, it’s a good time to give yourself some help and start Echinacea liquid or take Standard Process Echinacea C.

Very Important to get some C with the Echinacea as it needs it to activate it.  Not taking some C with the Echinacea will deplete your reserves and may cause some C deficiency.

If taking Liquid Echinacea; Take 2 dropperfuls  6 X times a day until you consume 2 oz.

This will take approximately 1 week.  Add Standard Process Cataplex C. Take 1 tablet each time you take the dropperfuls so 6 X a day as well.

If taking the Echinacea C from Standard Process, take 1 or 2 tablets daily for about a week.  Or you can come in to get tested on the dosage for your body

YOU ARE SICK

This is when you actually have some observable, clinical symptoms, like a sore throat, a fever, nasal or lung congestion, you’re coming down with a cold, or a wound, a trauma….

Liquid Echinecea; Take 1 dropperful every hour that you’re awake.

About 16 dropperfuls a day until you consume 2 oz

This will take about 4 days. Your immune system needs some help now, so it’s time to really power down with Echinacea.  Add some Standard Process Cataplex C. Take 1 tablets with each dropperful.

Echinacea C: Take 1 tablet every hour as above.  Continue for 3 or 4 days.

YOU ARE REALLY SICK

This is when all of a sudden you realize you’re sweating, you got chills, food poisoning, where you go Man! I am really sick.   Something that you think might put you in bed for a week or a month, or even a degenerative disease or any type of immune-depressive disorder.   Whatever, but you’re really ill.

Are these “Sneaky” Chemicals Causing You to Pack on the Pounds?

Obesogens are foreign chemical compounds that disrupt normal development and balance of fat metabolism, which can lead to obesity.

Your body gets the energy it needs from food through a process called metabolism.

Your endocrine (or hormonal) system is precisely tuned. But it is also extremely sensitive and can be easily thrown off kilter by compounds that actually mimic hormones. These “hormone impostors” can hijack your body’s regulatory systems, including the systems that control body weight.

Obesogens work in three ways. They:

  1. Encourage the body to store fat and re-program cells to become fat cells
  2. Promote insulin resistance, causing the pancreas to pump more of this “fat storage hormone”
  3. Prevent the appetite-reducing hormone leptin from being released, shutting off the “I’m full” signal

Dr. Bruce Blumberg, professor of biology at UC Irvine says that, “The role of obesogens in fat accumulation raises questions about the effectiveness of just diet and exercise in helping people lose pounds and maintain a proper weight.”

Unfortunately, these chemicals are found everywhere – from product packaging and cookware to lotions and beauty products… as well as in healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, fish and meats.

But the good news is that with a little knowledge you can do a lot to avoid obesogens and their hormone-hampering effects. As a client I share list of ingredients that act as obesogens.   Soy is at the top of the list and unfortunately promoted as a healthy alternative to meat.

Here are a few tips to reduce or eliminate your exposure:

  • Choose Organic Produce:Many pesticides and fungicides mimic the hormone, estrogen. They also impair thyroid function and increase fat cell growth, contributing to weight gain. Eat only organic foods that have not been treated with chemicals. Of highest importance are the “Dirty Dozen” which contribute to 90% of our pesticide exposure. These include: non-organic peaches, apples, bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, kale, lettuce, imported grapes, carrots, and pears. Always choose organic when buying these foods.
  • Say Sayonara to Soy:Soy contains daidzen and genistein – estrogen-like compounds that can increase fat stores and even promote cancer. Soy is also a crop that’s highly contaminated with pesticides, giving you a “double dose” of obesogens..
  • Ban the Cans:Can liners contain bisphenol-a (BPA) – one of the most potent obesogens known. The exception to this rule are the few companies that have taken the initiative to create BPA-free can liners including Vital Choice (sardines, salmon, etc), Eden Foods (beans) and Native Forest (coconut milk, fruits, veggies).
  • Avoid Plastics:Plastics contain a variety of chemicals that impair hormone function. Avoid plastic food storage containers, plastic water bottles, and plastic wrap. And NEVER microwave in plastic. If you have to use a plastic water bottle avoid those with recycling codes #3 or #7.  Store your food in and filtered water in glass containers.
  • Say “NO” to Nonstick:The non-stick coating material – PFOA – is a powerful hormone disruptor that can leach into foods when heated. Opt instead for ceramic-coated nonstick cookware or cast-iron.

In addition to keeping obesogens out of your body, it’s also important to detox from those that have made their way in. You see, these compounds are not readily eliminated by the body. They get stored in your fat cells… for as long as 20 years!

EBOLA

Ebola is a serious viral infection and medical science worldwide has no answer. As much as the media spreads fear, we have to remind ourselves that panic and fear are the worst advisers.

Where did this outbreak occur?

Peter Piot, who discovered the Ebola virus, pointed out that many of the West African states suffered decades through civil wars, starvation, polluted water, rare to non-medical service, and disastrous hygiene-including high rates of venereal diseases. Collectively, these threats suppress the immune system. We learned from Tuberculosis, which always flairs up during war time and starvation. Microbes need a favorable terrain to grow. Based on this understanding some German researchers stated that we would only see a limited outbreak in western countries. Because there is no current medicine available, a strong immune system is the answer.

What is our best defense against Ebola?

I suggest we remain level headed and ask our patients to do the same. Let’s remind them of the following:

  • As in the cases of, BIRD FLU, SWINE FLU, SARS, etc., there is no specific cure for EBOLA currently available.
  • A strong immune system and clean internal/external environments are key to prevention of any disease.
  • Proper nutrition is a must! Patients should regularly consume fresh fruits, vegetables, and low sugar foods, exercise regularly, reduce daily stress and get sufficient rest. They should also avoid immune system destroyers such as foods high in saturated fats, GMOs, refined sugar, and refined flour products.

EAT BUTTER – TIME Magazine Article

On June 23rd, the cover of Time Magazine prominently featured two words: “Eat Butter.”

In an article titled, “Ending the War on Fat,” the venerable mainstream publication finally put to rest one of the most detrimental myths about health and nutrition – the myth that saturated fat is to blame for heart disease.

But what the magazine didn’t mention in this otherwise excellent article, was that Time played a big role in popularizing this deadly misconception in the first place!

The Seven Countries Study… or the 22 Countries Study?

In 1961, Time featured physiologist Ancel Keys on the cover, with an article about his Seven Countries Study, which compared heart disease mortality rates and fat consumption across seven countries. His comparison showed a “remarkable relationship.”

The countries with the highest fat intake had the highest levels of heart disease. The countries with the lowest fat intake had the lowest levels of heart disease.

At the time, Jacob Yerushalmy, a PhD statistician at the University of California at Berkeley, pointed out that we had fat consumption data in 22 countries. So why wasn’t it called “The 22-Country Study?”

It wasn’t called that, because Ancel Keys started with the conclusion. He cherry-picked the countries that matched his pre-conceived notion and threw out the ones that contradicted it. And most of them did! When all 22 countries were analyzed, the “remarkable relationship” remarkably disappeared.

In fact, the complete set of data actually suggested that those eating the MOST saturated animal fat had LOWER rates of heart disease!

Yet, despite the obvious flaws in his research, Ancel Keys’ study formed the basis of the “lipid hypothesis.” Unfortunately, the butter bashing and anti-saturated fat campaigns were not the only harmful dietary dictates perpetuated during this period.

The Rise of Sugars, Grains & Seed Oils (and the Decline of Public Health)

From the 1960s onward, the medical establishment, government health organizations and the processed food industry simultaneously urged the public to replace these wholesome, natural foods with high-carbohydrate, grain-based processed foods and industrially-produced seed and vegetable oils. They even began vigorous campaigns to steer people away from real butter and to replace it with deadly trans-fats – in the form of so-called “better-than-butter” spreads.

It wasn’t long before grocery store shelves were filled with low-fat and fat-free fake foods.

It also wasn’t long before the public health began to take a dramatic turn for the worse. Excess dietary sugar and carbohydrates along with omega-6 rich industrial seed oils are clearly implicated in insulin resistance, obesity and chronic inflammation – all of which increase your risk for cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other degenerative diseases.

It’s no wonder that the rates of obesity and disease began to skyrocket.

AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM DYSFUNCTION

When you flip a light switch on in your house, you know what the end-result will be. The light switch connects a circuit that produces light when the electrons reach the filament. Your computer is similar. While you type a report or surf the Internet, the computer performs an abundance of unseen tasks in the background: checking for printer signals, moving data to the hard drive, and organizing its memory.   It is easy to take these tasks for granted, because they operate behind the scenes; they don’t seem relevant to the task at hand.

The human body functions much the same way. Every process in the body is controlled by signals sent from the brain, through the nerves, to each individual organ or muscle. Like the example of our computer, there is an abundance of tasks the body performs that can be easily taken for granted.    These background tasks are referred to as the “autonomic nervous system”.    Heart rate, sleep, digestion, and vascular pressure are all normal bodily functions that don’t receive a second thought.    But, what if the body didn’t perform these functions correctly?   What does autonomic nervous system dysfunction feel like?

There are two possible scenarios:

1-  Blocking

2-  Switching

 

There are a few illnesses that cause autonomic nervous system dysfunction.   As if by design, the areas of the brain controlling the autonomic nervous system were made the most secure. Even in degenerative neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, autonomic functions like heart rate and digestion remain untouched until the late stages of the illness.

However, there are stressors that do cause dysfunction on the autonomic nervous system.

The most common stressors are:

  • Food sensitivities
  • Immune Challenges

o       Bacteria

o       Virus

o       Parasites

o       Or Fungus (Yeast overgrowth, like candida)

  • Metal toxicity
  • Chemical toxicity
  • Scars (a break in the skin interferes with the communication between nerve endings)

Digestion, heart rate and syncope, pain response, and even sleep can be impaired.  The symptoms may present themselves differently from person to person such as:

Sleep dysfunction

Inability to sit or stand for prolonged periods

Nausea

Pain response

Balance/Vertigo

Mental exhaustion

 

Autonomic Nervous System switching is a phenomenon in which the parasympathetic (rest & digest response) or sympathetic (fight or flight response), or both systems are operating opposite to what is necessary for optimum function.  In essence, it regulates in the opposite direction of what it is supposed to do; hence, the term switching

The best way to determine if switching is present is to use a Heart Rate Variability (HRV) test with the patient in both the lying and standing positions.  This test will check for both blocking and switching at the same time. Both the parasympathetic and sympathetic systems may also do the opposite of what they are supposed to do, and this is called a double switch.

I think of switching as being the presence of a short circuit just as in the blocking short circuit.  This needs to be corrected before the ‘analyzer’ will properly function.  Just as with blocked regulation, switching has its clinical implications.  Unlike blocking, switching will cause the patient to react adversely to his clinical program.  Even though the correct program may have been given to the patient, he will react incorrectly to it.  For instance, the patient’s condition will appear to worsen.  This is a good sign that switching is present and therefore the astute practitioner will look for it.

Just as with blocking, switching will also skew the results of the reflex analysis, so it is very important that any switching be corrected before moving on to the next step.  So, if someone is going along and improving, and suddenly his program is not working and he appears to be getting worse, it is time to check to see if he is switched.  Once switching is found to be present, and the malfunctioning circuit is identified and corrected, the program will start to work again.

There are 108 different switching ‘circuits’ so the best way to check for switching is by using the heart rate variability instrumentation to detect its presence.  Once it is found, the practitioner can proceed to check the 108 circuits to find the switch and fix it.
